MUST WATCH - A TV RECOMMENDATION: THE STREET

MUST WATCH - A TV RECOMMENDATION: THE STREET

If you’re looking for a new show to watch while you keep looking for a job, procrastinate from your job or to indulge in because you lost your job, I highly recommend the little known show The Street. The Street is a dark, intense drama, each episode centered around a character or family that lives on this particularly ordinary street in the suburbs. Many of the actors are easily recognisable from Harry Potter. The reason I hold this show so close to heart is because the show presents very realistic and plausible matters, that get extremely out of hand and end in ridiculously depressing or high stake situations. Each episode is like a journey through the Twilight Zone.

One episode that fucks with your mind is called ‘Twins’, this central character played by David Thewlis (Professor Lupin). On a casual day, two adult twins are enjoying a soccer match on the television and eating lemon sherbets. As the rich, single and content twin chokes to death on his sherbet, the twin with the shitty family life and financial struggles makes an insane impulse decision and swaps identities with his twin. He then attends “his” own funeral, sees that no one from work shows up, he watches his family grieve for him, he watches his wife’s co-worker make moves on his newly widowed wife. Within all the chaos of witnessing the aftermath of his own death, many lessons are learned. What makes the show believable is the flawless acting. We all know that British actors are the best. Do yourself a favour and try out this little show, it’s a hidden treasure.
